  • Abstract:

This report will analyse the linguistic landscape of West Street, one of the main streets in Sheffield, England. The city represtens the linguistic diversity which is is reflected by the signages on the local restarurants, shops and other businesses in the West Street, about which no research has been conducted previously.

The reaserch primarly aims at asnwering two questions: what languages are presented on the signs of restaurants in West Street and what is the percentage of the certain signages representative of the linguistic communities in Sheffield

For the literature research we considered various findings from the Multilingual Manchester site in order to get insight into conducting an analysis of linguitic landscapes of given areas, as well as paper titled “A Micro-Study of the Linguistic Landscape of London Road, Sheffield” for the more place-specific data. For the more general information on the Sheffield’s demographics we used Wikipedia findings.

For the data collection we used “Qpzm LocalStats UK” in order to find up-do date statistic of demographics in Sheffield. The Google Street served similar purpose to applications such as “Linguasnapp” which is used in order to analyse the linguistic diversity in the City of Manchester.
