  • Abstract:

The aim of this study is to investigate the multilingual practices and linguistic hierarchy in the Northern part of Italy. The focus is on the use of the Lombard dialect by the native speakers of Italian in order to understand the role and social status of the minority language. Undoubtedly, the status of Italian dialects has been shifting over the years due to socio-political changes that occurred in Italy. In the past, numerous dialects were spoken across the whole country as it was socially accepted and considered a norm. Nowadays, Italian society is biased with regards to dialects. In large cities, like Rome or Milan, it is better to speak the standard Italian or even English rather than use any dialect in public. For these reasons, the goal of this study is to explore the tense relation between such languages as Italian, Lombard and English in this particular region in Italy.
